Мотоцикл Suzuki RM250

Suzuki RM250 model history 1976—
Suzuki RMX250 model history 1989—

Suzuki introduced the RM series of motocross models in 1975, ”RM” standing for Racing Model”. The range quicly stretched out from 50 to 400cc and became very successful. A few years later the Full Floater swingarm was introduced and water-cooled engines came along in the early 80's — and the developement of the RM models continues even today.

The ”Full Floater”mono shock system was introduced by Suzuki to all full-size bikes (125cc, 250cc and 465cc) starting in 1981.

Suzuki first used liquid cooling on the RM125 in 1981. The RM250 was liquid cooled starting in 1982. The RM465/RM500 was never liquid-cooled. The first liquid cooled RMs, the 1981 RM125 and 1982 RM250, are by some people considered two of the finest MX bikes ever made. Both are in the Dirt Bike magazine's ”Hall of Fame” and recently Motocross Action magazine said that the 1981 RM125 was perhaps one of the best MX bikes of the last 25 years.

The all new '82 RM250Z was an advanced machine, fitted with a water-cooled Full Reed with dual radiators. It also had lighter overall weight, "Full Floater" rear suspension, adjustable damping refillable gas/oil shock with remote reservoir, aluminium box-type swingarm, a new, more responsive flat side carburetor, redesigned frame, lighter long-travel leading axle air forks and a redesigned plastic fuel tank.

With the '83 RM250, fork diameter was increased to 43mm. Engine changes included a different cylinder head (revised squish band), and increased crankshaft inertia. Unfortunately, these changes were a step backwards as the '82 had a more potent powerband. Minor cosmetic changes were the only visable differences.

Suzuki announces that they use their own SBC (Suzuki Boron Composite) coating on the RM250 engine. It is lighter than normal metal and radiates heath more easily. The more obvious improvement is more noticeable. For the first time, the RM250 has disc brakes both front and rear. The maximum power output is slightly over 50 horsepower.

Also, the '86 RM250G had a new and stronger frame. Suzuki says that the amount of frame parts has been decreased to less than half. The Full Floater rear suspension was new, both swing and the link system."An eccentric cam in the link system for increased progressiveness and improved damping. Lower seat height despite of the higher ground clearance.”

The engine was coated Blue.

Suzuki says that the power and torque has been increased for the 2004-year's model. Redesigned and lighter flat-top piston, redesigned exhaust ports and piston ringsare some of the other improvements to the engine. The carburetor has been rejetted.

The frame, suspension and brakes have all been improved for the K4 model. Both front and rear shock absorbers are new, the rear suspension linkage has been redesigned for better progressivity, both front and rear brakes have been improved and the front fork is thicker and the outer fork tube longer than in the previous model. The frame has the same design than before but is made a bit stronger. Some minor improvements on the rear wheel and clutch cabel adjustement.

The footpegs have been moved 10mm (0.4 in) backwards, the handlebar 7mm (0.3 in) and the seat has been redesigned and is made 10mm (0.4 in) lower than in the previous year's model.

Мотоцикл Suzuki RM125

  • Облегченная цепь DID DMA2.

Suzuki RM125 2003

The 2003 RM125 is the latest version of the racebike that made Travis Pastrana famous, with a broader power band and better throttle response, producing significantly more power and torque between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm with no loss of high-rpm performance. That translates into better lap times with quicker acceleration and better rear-wheel traction.

Much of the power band improvement came from redesigned, better-sealing exhaust-port valves and more precise control of those valves. A new actuation system controls how far and how fast the valves open and close, matching exhaust port timing and area to engine rpm to improve throttle response and power delivery.

New ducts in the side covers feed cool air to the airbox, while a new rubber cover keeps air warmed by the radiator from entering the front of the airbox. The subframe cross-brace tube located behind the airbox is now round in cross-section instead of square, improving air flow to the airbox and also slightly reducing weight. The radiator is about 10% larger, with 11 rows instead of the previous model’s 10 rows.

A new press-fit gearshift stopper pin, a stronger shift-cam stopper spring and a shouldered shift pawl pin all contribute to more precise shifting. The shouldered shift pawl pin fits into the coils of the shift pawl spring, instead of sitting on top of the end of the spring, reducing side-to-side play.

The RM125 built its reputation with handling to match its engine performance, the type of handling that gives a rider a choice of lines, inside or outside, to make a critical pass. It’s the type of handling that comes from the right combination of geometry, frame rigidity and suspension response.

The 2003 RM125’s single-backbone, double-cradle high-tensile steel-alloy frame has detail refinements, while the mid-stroke response of the front forks and rear shock has been improved. Slightly stiffer fork springs, 0.42 vs. 0.40, allow the use of less compression damping, and reshaped and resized compression damping valves help smooth mid-stroke response and improve response over small bumps. The inner cartridge rod and pipe nut are now made of aluminum alloy instead of steel, reducing weight, and the spring guide bush is now metal instead of plastic, increasing durability. The fork cap head is now hexagonal instead of oval and can be turned with a conventional wrench instead of requiring a special tool, simplifying maintenance.

The piggyback-reservoir rear shock has revised rebound and compression damping, again aimed at improving mid-stroke and low-speed response, improving acceleration traction. The shock shaft has been hardened for better durability, and the reservoir cap head is hexagonal instead of oval.

The brake discs have reshaped holes to reduce squealing and pad wear while improving braking power and feel, and the rear brake pad material provides more stopping power and longer pad life. The center and lip sections of front wheel rim are thicker for better durability and the reshaped front wheel spacer helps locate the axle properly when the wheel is installed.

The foot peg mounts are redesigned to not pack with mud on a wet track, and the rear brake pedal mount has been moved up to keep it from dragging on the ground in rutted corners. As a result, the rear brake lever can be straighter, slightly reducing weight. The foot pegs are now 10mm longer for better boot grip.

The seat is reshaped, lowering the riding position by 7mm, and the seat cushion foam is about 8% firmer to compensate for the reduced thickness. The seat cover is now made of thicker vinyl, increasing durability.

The 2003 Suzuki RM125’s brilliant chrome side graphics stand out against its bright Suzuki Champion Yellow color, and an extra-thick clear plastic lamination helps keep those graphics looking good. The number plates are white, ready for the application of racing numbers.

Air-cooled models, 1975—1980

1975 Suzuki year code: M

Suzuki introduced the RM series of motocross models in 1975, these replacing the TM models. The range quicly stretched out from 50 to 400cc and became very successful. A few years later the Full Floater swingarm was introduced and water-cooled engines came along in 1981 — and the developement of the RM models continues even today.

The first model version of the RM125 had "downpipe", the exhaust pipe placed under the engine. The TM125 was discontinued and instead came the RM125. When tested against the competition in the US market the RM125  was found not powerful enough to compete with the Honda CR, kawasaki KX and Yamaha YZ models and had to be quickly modified before mid year 1975. The model name to the revisited model was RM125S.

To make the bike faster Suzuki did some interesting alterations in the following areas of the engine: they reworked the porting of the cylinder barrel massively, all ports were opened significantly and they appeared to have been finished by hand when viewing the cylinder. The new hand built exhaust pipe for the RM125S was slightly larger in diameter and made of many rolled steel pieces welded together, not stamped with two londitudal folded seams like the M model. The stinger bulb was also welded on at the end of a slim diameter pipe with a stiffener rib above and below it to stop cracking where this pipe met the end of the expansion chamber.

The headpipe also still carried the OEM chrome exhaust collar, but now used extra "L" shaped  pieces placed under the bolt heads, these 'ears' each held one end of the springs that kept the pipe in place to the cylinder head.

The pistons skirt had two holes drilled into it to help cool the thin exhaust port bridge section as the new exhaust port was now quite wide, the head gasket material was also slightly different.

The S models Mikuni carburettor was also quite larger and didn't have the tall top cap as the M model, and the carburettor intake rubber/alloy pipe was also larger and carried an adapter plate. The new carb had increased jetting values and a special needle valve orifice with three extra angular drilled holes to allow fuel to bypass the lower needle valve body into the bigger float bowl.

The newer and bigger CDI unit for the S version was now mounted onto the front of the frame headtube with a bracket instead of in front of the aircleaner case as with the M, and finally the air cleaner case was altered to accomodate a bigger rubber connector boot. To let the owner know they had bought an 'S' model, the fuel tank had a decal affixed right below the filler opening that said RM125"S".

As noted, the power output went up to 26hp, and this was enough to allow it to run with the CR, KX and YZ models that were beating the M model. The S model only lasted for about four months (later in some countries, it was sold as a 1976 model at least in Finland) as the new A model was being tested for '76 and the S therefore never sold in large quantities.

“You can see quite clearly the CDI box mounted on the steering column on the bike and how the hand made pipe looked as well as the non tall cap carb. The small dents in the stinger bulb were there when I bought the bike, but the bigger impression in the pipe lower down is for the kick starter to pass when starting,” Allan says.

Alan Tucker sent me some RM125S spec carb data to add to this page against the standard RM125M. Alan writes: “Just look at the size of this thing and its main jet compared to the M models tiny 28mm one with a #180 main, even the faster A model only had a 32 mm carb when it was released, but the same size 280 main jet was retained.
In the RM125S carb the two floats were separate from the arm, riding up and down on two vertically mounted brass shafts pressed into each side of the bottom of the float bowl. They also had short pins fixed onto the side portion that touched the separate arm unit to register float level. For some unknown reason Suzuki choose to use bright PINK poly hoses for the overflow tubes on the S model, you could not miss the colour of these hoses.”

Suzuki RM125B RM125 '77

1976 Suzuki year code: A

The RM125A with six gears was distinguishable a mile away, the first Suzuki motorcrosser with an up-swept exhaust pipe. The bike was very fast and competitive. In 1976 there were two different models available; the RM125A and the (rare) RM125S. The models had the same piston displacement but were quite different motorcycles. While the RM125A's engine had reed valve, the RM125S piston valve. It also had different piston rings, larger carburrettor and different gearbox etc. The S model had a 5-speed gearbox. There were differencies even in the suspension. The most significant difference between the models was that the RM125A had a high-drawn exhaust pipe, while the RM125S had it drawn under the engine.

The 1976 RM125S and the 1975 RM125M were almost identical machines. Probably the RM125M had a welded on muffler, and the RM125S muffler was removable by a top and bottom spring. There were some carburetor changes, and a gain of three horse power in the S over the M model.

In Australia the RM125A came very late and weren't available until the 1977 Motocross season.

I haven't managed to find a picture of the RM125S anywhere so I used a RM125M picture instead. I will replace the picture as soon as I can find one of the S model.

The only things that stood out to tell the B model apart from the previous model was the leading front axel and the “muffler on the end of the exhaust was a fraction longer. Inside the engine the bore and stroke was changed to a slightly smaller bore with a longer stroke to help bottom end performance. It was now a square 54 mm x 54 mm bore engine.

In Australia the RM125B came very late and weren't available until the 1978 Motocross season.
