Suzuki RM500 история модели 1983—1985

1983 Suzuki year code: D

В

Suzuki introduced its succesfull RM series of motocross models in 1975. The largest of them all, RM500, was introduced in 1983, even larger thanthe 1981—1982 RM465 and its precessor, the 1978—1980 RM400.

At the time it was the largest motocrosser from Suzuki (when RM400 was introduced in 1980 it was the largest). The Full-Floater rear suspension was first used by the works road racing and motocross teams. It went into the RM series in 1981.

The 1982-year's RM465D was practically the same bike as the 1981-year's RN465X. In fact, even t he '83 RM500 differed from the '82 RM465 mainly from the increase in engine bore size. Other than minor cosmetic changes, the bikes were very similar.

Suzuki RM400 model history
1978—1980

1978 Suzuki year code: C

The largest Suzuki motorcrosser of the seventies. Still air-cooled with conventional, but laid down twin shocks at the rear.

The U.S. sales brochure from '78 says this: ”Even if somebody could build an engine as good as the RM-400 Power Reed, they still couldn't beat Suzuki's air forks, aluminum works type box section arm, and laid dow, forward mounted gas-oil shocks (with reservoir) for total performance. Conical hub in front—full floating brake and magnesium hub panel in the rear.”

The first pictures below is a detail from the sales brochure I found on the vintage-suzuki.com website.

Modernized appearance and larger engine. The U.S. sales brochure from '79 tells this about the model: ”Power Reed engine; CDI ignition; improved clutch release mechanis; 5-speed trans;leading axle rear forks; forward mounted, gas-oil remote reservoir shocks, 2-way damping adjustment, 3-way spring load settings (11.8" rear wheel travel); full floating rear brake; magnesium brake panels/engine side covers; heavy duty chain tensioner and chain guide; extra-rigid, extruded aluminum swing arm; self-cleaning aluminum alloy rims; plastic fuel tank; slim-styled at 223 lbs.”

The picture below is a detail from the sales brochure I found on the vintage-suzuki.com website. The next two pictures show a restored '79 RM400N. “This was restored with mostly NOS parts including tank, seat, all plastic, forks etc,” says Chris, the owner.

New graphics but basically the same machine as the '79 RM400N. Wider 5.10-18 rear wheel, more ground clearance, a little heavier. You will find more specs on the RM400 magazine articles page (Dirt Bike article, May 1980).

The pictures of the Massimo Pipino's RM400T are taken recently and the bike is not 100% original but quite close.

Comments: ”This is the bike I used to ride in vintage MX championship. It's a Suzuki RM400. It was built in 1979 and I bought it two years ago.

It is in its original shape. The only thing I replaced is the handlebar, because i prefer the shape of Renthal.

The bike is very easy to ride, powerful but not brutal like, for example, the later KTM 495/'91. It's not too heavy and you can ride it like it was a 250cc.

Great bike!”

Piston Specifications

The engine used a two-stroke, single-cylinder design. The bore by stroke of the single piston measured 3.03 inches by 3.14 inches. The piston had a 7.6-to-1 compression ratio. The piston design featured a piston port and reed valve operating system, which was a common design for dirt bikes and other ATVs. The piston and reed valve system was attached to the crankcase. The gasoline intake system sported a dual-inlet design. Other piston features included four scavenging pots, which provided the engine with above-par scavenging and airflow capability. To further improve combustion and efficiency, the cylinder used a squashed-dome design shape.
Engine Specifications

The 1976 Suzuki RM370 engine had a piston displacement of 372 cc. Maximum power output measured 42 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, while the peak torque potential measured 33.7 foot-lbs. at 6,000 rpm. The standard clutch used a wet, multi-plate with aluminum and fiber-discs design. The air filtration system featured an enhanced oiled polyurethane foam air-filter. The ignition used Suzuki PEI Pointless Electronic ignition technology, and the starter featured a non-primary kickstart.

Fuel and Carburetor Specifications

The engine also sported a Mikuni VM36SS carburetor fuel system. The carburetor's main jet specification was set at 300. The needle jet was R2, and the needle was a 6FJ6-3. The slide cut was set at 1.5, and the pilot was No. 50. The factory position of the air-adjusting screw was 1.5 turns open. The float level measured 2.16 inches. Suzuki recommended using premium-grade fuel, and the gasoline-to-lubrication mixture amount was 20 to 1.
Dimensions

The 1976 Suzuki Rm370 had a length of 84.3 inches, a width of 38.8 inches and a height of 47.2 inches. The ground clearance measured 10.4 inches, and the seat measured 35 inches high. The swing arm had a length of 19.5 inches. The dry weight of the bike was 235 lbs. Weight was 44.8 percent on the front and 55.2 percent on the rear. The fuel tank held 2.1 gallons. The standard front tire dimensions were GS-45F 3.0 by 21.0 inches, and the rear tires were GS-56F 4.5 by 18.0 inches. Front brakes featured a 5.11-inch cable-operated design, while the rear used a 5.9-inch cable-operated design.

Design and Features

The front suspension used a Kayaba telescopic fork with 8.66 inches of stroke, and 247 cc of oil capacity. The rear suspension system used Kayaba/Dr. DeCarbon nitrogen gas shocks with 8.62 inches of axle travel. The dirt bike frame featured a chrome, semi-double cradle design. The standard transmission was a five-speed manual with a straight cut, primary-drive ratio of 2.384 to 1. Gear ratios were as follows: first: 2.071 to 1, second, 1.624 to 1, third: 1.263 to 1, fourth: 1.000 to 1, and fifth: 0.869 to 1. The final drive had a 13-tooth counter-shaft and a 50-tooth rear sprocket.
